Surf, Cafés, Food, Movement & Wellness Around Ericeira — from people who actually live here.

Ericeira is more than just a surf town. Between cliffside sunsets, local cafés, long beach days and a strong community vibe, it has become a place where people come for a short trip and somehow stay much longer than planned.

This guide brings together some of our favorite places in and around Ericeira. From surf spots and coffee shops to sunset drinks, movement and wellness spaces, these are the places that shape everyday life here.

Surf & Beaches

Foz do Lizandro

Foz do Lizandro combines surf, beach life and sunset culture all in one place. The river mouth creates softer sand bottom waves that are ideal for mellow surf sessions, especially on smaller swells. The long boardwalk restaurants and bars make it one of the most social beaches around Ericeira, especially during golden hour when people gather for drinks after surfing.

São Julião

Located south of Ericeira in Carvoeira, São Julião is one of the widest beaches in the area and perfect for long beach days. The atmosphere feels relaxed and open, with enough space to spend an entire afternoon between surfing, reading and simply slowing down. The beach break offers multiple peaks and is beginner friendly on smaller days, while becoming more powerful on bigger tides. It usually works best around mid to low tide.

Praia do Sul (Baleia)

Praia do Sul sits directly below the historical center and has one of the mellowest atmospheres in town. On smaller mornings, longboarders fill the lineup while locals sit along the beach with coffee watching the ocean. The mixed sand and reef setup works best with a bit more swell and often becomes a regular spot for slow morning routines.

Praia dos Pescadores

Praia dos Pescadores is the central harbor beach of Ericeira and one of the easiest places for swimming and beach volleyball. While it is usually small for surfing, it can become surprisingly fun during lower tides when bigger spots are maxed out. Its location directly in the center gives it a very local and social feeling throughout the day.

Ribeira d'Ilhas

Ribeira d'Ilhas is probably the most iconic surf spot in Ericeira. Surrounded by cliffs and ocean views, it is just as beautiful for watching surfing as it is for surfing itself. The long right-hand point break works best on clean mornings and smaller to medium swells, creating long rides over reef and cobblestones that attract surfers from all over the world.

Praia do Norte (Algodio)

Praia do Norte has a much rawer and more open energy compared to some of the more sheltered beaches nearby. Located north of the center, the exposed beach break offers both lefts and rights over sand and reef. On clean mornings with northwest swell and east wind, it becomes one of the most fun and uncrowded beach breaks around town.

São Sebastião

São Sebastião feels slightly more local and rugged, with rocky cliffs surrounding the small cove. The right-hand wave is more approachable, while the heavier left known as Moita is better suited for experienced surfers. Early mornings here are usually the smoothest and quietest.

Coxos

Located in Ribamar, Coxos is one of Portugal's most famous waves. This powerful right-hand point break is fast, technical and world class when winter swells arrive. It is definitely a wave for experienced surfers only, but even from the cliffs above, it is impressive to watch on bigger days.

Matadouro

Matadouro sits right next to the skate park and has become a favorite for beginner to intermediate surfers looking to improve on reef waves. Depending on the tide, the wave changes character throughout the day, becoming more forgiving at lower tide and offering longer walls on higher tides. The surrounding cliffs and ocean views also make it one of the most scenic surf spots near town.

São Lourenço

São Lourenço is one of the more dramatic beaches north of Ericeira and feels deeply connected to local surf culture. During summer, people gather here for volleyball and sunset hangs, while winter brings heavy waves and powerful reef breaks. The cliffs surrounding the beach create one of the most beautiful sunset spots in the area.

Praia da Calada

Praia da Calada is a smaller sheltered bay north of São Lourenço with a much calmer atmosphere. The beach feels hidden away compared to the more popular surf spots nearby. On the right conditions, an occasional reef peak appears on lower tides, but even without surf it remains a beautiful place to slow down and spend a quiet afternoon.
